Zana — Privacy Policy

Zana is a live, in-class quiz game. This page explains what we collect and how we use it. We keep it to the minimum needed to run the game and give instructors class results.

Quick play — no account

When you join a game by scanning the room’s code, you are anonymous. We assign you a random throwaway emoji and a random id for that one game, and we record only the answers you tap and your score for that game. We do not collect your name, email, or any personal information. This data belongs to that single game session and is throwaway.

Registered play — sign in with Google

If you sign in with Google to join your course’s games, we receive your name and email from your Google account, and we store your quiz answers, scores, and which courses you’ve joined — so your instructor can see class results and you can see your own history. We request only basic Google profile information (name, email); we never access anything else in your Google account.

Microphone

The microphone is used only by the instructor, in two places: on the presenting screen, to speak a question aloud during a game, and in the quiz editor, to say what the questions should be about instead of typing it. In both cases the mic is on only while you are recording — it is never listening in the background, and we never record a lecture. That audio is sent to our AI provider to transcribe into text and is then immediately discarded — we never store it. Students’ phones never use the microphone.

AI processing

We use OpenAI to generate quiz questions from lecture materials an instructor uploads, and to transcribe what an instructor says — a spoken question during a game, or a spoken topic in the editor. We send the material text or the instructor’s words — never students’ personal information.

Where your data lives

Zana runs on Render and Supabase (PostgreSQL), hosted in the United States.

Retention & deletion

Quick-play data is throwaway. Registered play history is kept so instructors can review class results. You can ask us to delete your data at any time, and a student’s records can be removed in a single operation.
